Kung Fu Panda 2 - A Very Good Adoption Story

I rarely watch TV but the other day while waiting for dinner, I sat down with my son and daughter who was watching Kung Fu Panda 2 on HBO. Although I saw the original movie, this sequel for me is a much better one. The adoption part of the story appealed to me being an adoptive mother of 2 kids, my now 21 year old son and my 4 year old daughter.  Needless to say, I sat through till the end of the movie.

I reached the part where Po is living his dream as the Dragon Warrior, protecting the Valley of Peace alongside his friends and fellow kung fu masters, the Furious Five. Master Shifu tells him, however, he has yet to achieve inner peace.

While helping to defend a village from wolf bandits who have been stealing refined metal for Lord Shen (the movie villain), Po is distracted by a symbol on the head wolf's armor, which caused him to get a "vision" of a mother panda (his birth mother) resulting in the wolves escape. This vision confused Po but he did not want any of his friends to know, so he went to talk to his father, Mr. Ping about his origins...where he came from.  His father started talking about duck eggs but stopped when Po seriously asked him who he really is. Mr. Ping finally told Po the truth...that he was found in a radish crate and that he was adopted. My son found it hilarious that Po did not know he was adopted when everybody else knew.  Well, look at them...a goose and a panda? How can they be biologically related? Now that Po knew he was adopted, he wanted to know more.  However, Master Shifu sends Po and the Furious Five to stop Lord Shen from his plan of conquering all of China.  Before they live, Mr. Ping brings out Po's things to bring on his journey, including mementos of his childhood with Mr. Ping.  It seems that Mr. Ping was trying to tell Po to remember him and to come back soon.  The ensuing scenes were fights between good and evil and in the end, Po learned about what happened to his parents and why he was adopted.  He finally attained inner peace, letting go of the past and realizing that in spite of all the tragedy that happened, he has lived a happy and fulfilling life and is unconditionally loved by Mr. Ping.

The part near the ending touched me leaving me teary eyed. Mr. Ping was attending to a customer with a son who wanted an audience with the Dragon Warrior, but he could not accommodate them, so he just muttered to himself that the Dragon Warrior was gone, making the customer decide to leave when suddenly Po appeared, with much tenderness he told Mr. Ping that he finally knew who he was...that "I am your son and you are my father".   That to me is an affirmation of unconditional love and yes,...inner peace.

  4. It's the relationship between parents and children that truly matters in the end, not just the biological connection. I know a lot of parents with adopted children, and I was touched at how one mom said of her adopted as a son "not born from my womb, but of my heart." Really not sure of the exact wordings, but something like that. :) I enjoyed Part 1 of Kung Fu Panda... I love the clumsy yet lovable character of Po, and you have summed up the movie so well, especially since you based it from your own personal experience. :)
