QUAN Delicacies, A Legacy Of Good Food

Quan Delicacies has been my source of Ilonggo and other native Filipino food for the last twenty years or so. I can still remember the excitement I felt when they opened their first self-service restaurant besides the Bacolod Doctor's Hospital.  When I was taking my graduate studies in La Salle, I would take lunch there and later, they opened another restaurant in La Salle Avenue which was even more convenient because of the bigger parking space. And so when the Negrense Blogging Society, Inc was invited for food tasting of their newer products, I was happy to go.

The invitation was for 3 PM, but I still had to bring my little girl to a birthday party and so, I was late.  I know the owner and founder of Quan, Tita Agnes Aguirre Cuenca, who like my mother is a member of the PWU Alumni -Western Visayas Chapter, while her daughter Chole Cuenca Chua who manages the business side has been an active volunteer of medical/surgical missions run by the St. Scholastica Bacolod Alumni Foundation.  They knew me individually as either my mother's daughter, or the hospital head coordinating with them during their missions.  I think they were a little bit surprised seeing me there as a blogger...hahaha!

To write about Quan is easy since I have always liked their food especially their pork dinuguan which I personally believe is the best ever among Bacolod and Silay restaurants.

I missed it so much that I had 2 servings with puto, of course!  Their puto is so good and can be kept frozen up to a year without spoiling or losing it's texture.  All you have to do is to steam it well before eating.

My next favorite is their panara which is crispy with right amount of filling.  This is one of my comfort foods and it tastes exactly like those served in my Lola's house for afternoon merienda when I was little. I could eat ten of these (even more) in one sitting!

My 6 year old daughter who is a very picky eater, swears by Quan's napoleones.  She basically devoured the ones I brought home and made me promise to bring home some more the next time I go to Bacolod. Now, every time I come home from work, the first thing she asks is: "where is my na...how do you say that, mommy?"

The "party fare" would not be complete without Quan's signature native delicacies. The alupi, kalamay-hati, suman, bebingka and the new-kid-on-the food tray, the pandan cassava cake.  I only have one word: delicious!

There are two other products that Quan will be bringing out this December.  The brazo de mercedes cupcake and a still unnamed Christmas cake which I will call, Christmas Cherry cake (heheh).  The cupcake is super "namit" (delicious in English, oishi in Japanese), soft, moist, creamy and best of all not too sweet. My mother loved it! I loved it! My son loved it! I will be first in line to buy when it will be made available on December 1 at Quan, La Salle.

Of course, let us not forget Quan's oldies but goodies...like the lumpia ubod, sausage rolls, their moist and fudgy brownies, butterscotch, walnut bars and caramel boat tarts, the taste and quality of which we continue to enjoy to this day.  They continue to innovate and add new products using local produce like guava and pandan.

There will always be other stores selling similar food, but there will only be one QUAN, a family of food for the family.

  1. Hello, it is such a comfort for me reading your blog about Bacolod delicacies. I missed my hometown very much especially the food. I now reside in Cagayan de Oro City. I'm quite curious of the Quan products. I might have an early summer vacation there on the 3rd week of March for alumni homecoming at LCC, can you possibly give me some tips on which products are viable for pasalubong?
